Manufacturers design cast supplies to support patients as they heal from arm or leg injuries that affect their mobility. Casts are longer-term solutions, usually applied by licensed physicians, that stay on for weeks or months as opposed to temporary orthopedic braces that remain on during physical activity.

Cotton Padding

Some casts stay hard and inflexible by design, which is why cotton under cast padding makes the cast more comfortable to wear. Manufacturers construct padding from soft cotton fibers that absorb moisture while maintaining the same consistency whether wet or dry. Hook-and-loop technology keeps the fabric snug against patients' skin while conforming to the contours of their leg or arm. Medical professionals may change the cast later, at which time they might completely replace the cotton padding.

Waterproofing Supplies

Patients may have to bathe when they have a plaster cast, but they can't allow the cast to get wet. Waterproofing supplies for hands, feet, legs and arms form a tight seal just above the cast while providing complete coverage over the cast. Patients can then maintain daily grooming with no worries of affecting the cast protecting their injury. Small waterproofing items cover just a foot or a hand. Others are much longer, extending their coverage to an entire arm or leg.

Crutches and Crutch Supplies

Consider adding crutches to the list of casting supplies your facility needs. Stocking various types of crutches for all sizes and shapes of people is helpful. High-quality crutches are made of aluminum and have sturdy adjustment levers that stay locked in position. Active people might need replacement padding and grips if they require crutches for an extended period of time. Padding consists of contoured foam rubber that goes under the arm and around the hand grips. Rubber stoppers on the feet of crutches provide grip for added stability and anti-slip security.

Walkers and Canes

Walkers and canes are orthopedic aids for individuals who need extra support without crutches. Rather than requiring all the weight be taken off leg, walkers and canes help transition injured patients to full mobility. Much like crutches, the best canes come in high-grade aluminum, remain locked in place and adjust to various heights. Walkers let people move using both hands for support. Consider maintaining a selection of wheelchairs for people who need to sit when staying mobile during their healing time.

Cast Shoes

Cast shoes represent an extra layer of padding and protection for someone's feet. These aids are especially important for patients who can't wear shoes because their legs, calves, ankles or feet are on the mend. These cast supplies contain plenty of padding underfoot with rubber soles for traction, as well as adjustable straps around the heel, ankle and arch that conform to each patient's contours. Cast shoes offer a way for people to rest their feet on the ground after walking around on crutches.Disclaimer: The contents of this article are for informational purposes only and are based on scientific and technical research noted below.
