Evaluating Durability and Quality
How long will it last?
- Check the warranty: good indication of desk's life expectancy
- Most warranties last between 5-15 years
- More expensive desks are built to last for several decades
- Most desks start wearing at edges, particularly on corners and at the center, near the chair
How well is it constructed?
Look at drawers:
- Open and close drawers: they should move back-and-forth smoothly when bearing weight
- Quality desks feature drawers with sturdy suspension and metal suspension rollers
- More expensive models will feature drawers that have been constructed with an interlocking dovetail (rather than glue)
- More expensive models will also include full extension slides... this allows drawer to extend completely, assuring you full access to all contents inside
Laminate Surfaces
- The thicker the laminate, the more protection provided from scratches, stains, etc
- Look at the finish — some desks have Diamond Coat® which adds extra durability
Metal Desks
- Assess steel used for construction
- Take a look at the drawers (closed) from a distance
- Any inconsistencies/gaps where drawer and desk meet means there is a flaw in construction
